Feed Cost Saving

Selected Species

Increase protein, energy, and mineral utilization and open the opportunities to use alternative feed ingredients.

Why is it important?

  • Feed comprises 70% of poultry production cost, hence profitability can be heavily impacted even with minor fluctuations in feed ingredients’ price and availability.
  • Alternative feed ingredients may offer viable options, but birds lack the natural ability to digest, absorb and utilize them similar to conventional feed ingredients.
  • Further, feed digestion and absorption could also be reduced by endogenous cell debris.
  • Undigested feed not only impacts the profitability of operation but also negatively affects the environment.

How to maximize the potential?

  • Ensure maximum protein, energy, and mineral availability from feed ingredients.
  • Broaden the opportunity to utilize alternative feed ingredients.
  • Maximize feed cost savings with exogenous enzyme solutions that complement the bird's digestion and absorption processes.

dsm-firmenich solutions

  • A range of carbohydrases can be used depending on the carbohydrate sources used, to maximize energy digestibility.
  • A protease can supplement endogenous protease activity and maximize protein digestion and utilization.
  • A phytase can break down phytic acid that cannot be broken down by endogenous enzymes to release essential minerals (Ca & P) for absorption.
  • A precision monitoring system using blood biomarkers can help predict metabolic challenges.
  • Precise sustainability measures can help reduce the environmental footprint while ensuring lifetime production.

OUR AMBITION

Feed cost savings in swine nutrition

Feed is the largest cost of pork production. Our products enable customers to increase feed efficiency and nutrient utilization, leaving them with more funds to invest in other areas.

Extra digestive power

Swine feed is not fully digested, meaning that highly valuable nutrients are lost. Feed enzymes from dsm-firmenich’s RONOZYME® range help farmers to realize this lost potential, increasing the proportion of nutrients utilized by pigs. This creates higher growth and a better return per kilo of feed.

The digestibility of feed is reduced due to antinutrients (NSPs, trypsin inhibitors, -conglicinin, phytic acid). RONOZYME® range of enzymes improves nutrient digestibility, enabling more economical rations and greater profits. Efficiency of digestion depends on microflora populations in the gut.

Less expensive supplementation

Phosphorus is a key nutrient, but naturally available phosphorus in plants is largely undigested by swine. Usually, expensive inorganic phosphorus needs to be added into swine feed to ensure adequate growth.

Increasing the digestibility of natural plant phosphorus by feeding RONOZYME® HiPhos is a cost-effective alternative, allowing for better animal growth and more efficient utilization of feed.

OUR AMBITION

Optimizing feed value while improving performance. It’s our specialty!

Ruminant farmers are more and more exposed to increase of feed costs as well as fertilizers and energy costs, both used to produce on farm forages and cereals. Changing climatic conditions can also greatly impact the quality and availability of grass and forages. Balancing input costs and animal performance, while responding to the sustainability concerns of consumers, has never been more complex, presenting a major challenge to ruminant nutritionists and advisors.

Grass, forages, grains and co-products are composed of different feed fractions – mainly fiber, starch, and proteins. In monogastric animals, these fractions are transformed into nutrients (absorbable components) by enzymes naturally present in the digestive tract. Feed additives (especially enzymes) are widely used to optimize feed formulation and achieve an effective balance between performance and feed cost. In ruminants, these additives are pre-digested in the rumen by microbiota that transforms them to produce specific nutrients, which are then absorbed directly via the rumen or else digested further in the digestive tract. The inclusion of advanced feed additives in ruminant diets can help optimize feed value while improving performance and sustainability.

Challenges:

  • Increases in the cost of feed, fertilizer and energy
  • Availability and quality of forages
  • Efficiency of nutrient digestibility
  • Sustainability of ruminant production

Solutions from dsm-firmenich

dsm-firmenich’s Performance Solutions deliver unrivaled feed optimization for ruminant diets while supporting animal welfare and protecting the environment. Our science-based solutions are designed to maximize the digestibility of fiber, starch and protein in ruminant diets. Extracting more nutrients from feedstuff permits the formulation of less expensive and more sustainable diets without compromising performance and health.

dsm-firmenich developed the first-ever enzyme for ruminants: RONOZYME® RumiStar™, a genuinely disruptive innovation targeting the starch fraction of feed. RONOZYME® RumiStar™ has been shown to increase the degradability of starch by 8%, the degradability of neutral detergent fiber (NDF) by 16%, and the digestibility of crude protein in the rumen by 5.5%. This increases the availability of nutrients in the rumen for the purposes of microbial growth, digestibility, and protein supply. It also elevates the total tract digestibility of starch, NDF and protein.

dsm-firmenich also provides best-in-class phytogenic and yeast solutions. CRINA® Ruminants has extensively demonstrated its capacity to extract more proteins as nutrients from the diet. It is used by many farmers and nutritionists to limit the loss of nitrogen caused by the deamination of amino acids in the rumen. Thanks to its action on hyper-ammonia-producing (HAP) bacteria in the rumen, CRINA® Ruminants has been proven to deliver a potent effect on milk persistency in the context of low-protein diets, with up to 1.7kg of milk per day produced and 350g per day of soybean meal saved in the total diet. CRINA® Ruminants also helps limit nitrogen emissions in urine and faces – an excellent example of feed optimization balancing cost, performance and sustainability.

Levabon® Rumen E is a unique hydrolyzed yeast solution. It acts on fiber digestion by making bioactive ingredients such as cell wall carbohydrates, peptides and metabolites directly available as feed for beneficial bacteria in the rumen. The action of Levabon® Rumen E creates a favorable environment in the rumen, as well as a positive effect on the digestibility of crude fiber, delivering increased ruminal digestibility of up to 12%.

Levabon® Rumen E, RONOZYME® RumiStar™ and CRINA® Ruminants are very stable products, formulated to support pelleting, blending with minerals, and storage at high temperatures. They are therefore flexible to use and easy to integrate into ruminant feed.

dsm-firmenich is the partner of choice for ruminant nutritionists and advisors. OUR AMBITION

Feed cost optimization

Feed is a major cost in aquaculture, and can account for >60-70% of total production costs. Therefore, improving cost effectiveness of feed is a priority for every producer and feed manufacturer, to maximize the return of investment.

Aquaculture businesses are faced with rising feed costs, which could reduce their profitability. Feed enzymes can help protect profits by enabling cost optimization and formula flexibility, as well as maximizing fish and shrimp performance.

Extracting more from less

By improving digestibility, feed enzymes are an important tool to extract more from less. This means that feed formulations can be adjusted with an optimized, or even reduced cost, without impacting feed, or animal performance.

Improving feed efficiency has a dual benefit in aquaculture. As well as aforementioned cost savings there are also benefits for water quality. Up to 80% of the total footprint of protein production comes from the feed. In this way, enzymes also contribute to a more sustainable aquaculture industry by reducing effluents, specifically nitrogen and phosphorous, which are key drivers for biodiversity change.

dsm-firmenich – THE strategic partner for feed cost optimization

Utilizing cutting edge know-how and technology, and with a strong innovation mindset to build partnerships, dsm-firmenich has developed a diverse feed enzyme portfolio to support the profitable growth of aquaculture, specifically:

Cost-effective or cost reduction?

Aquaculture must become more cost effective, especially during challenging economic times. This is not the same as cost cutting, which would result in a race to the bottom. Although initial investments might be needed, the cost per unit of animal protein is reduced through efficiency and productivity gains. Ultimately, the focus should not be solely on cost reduction, but instead a greater return of investment and margin over feed cost.
